Cryptonomicon is a 1999 novel by American author Neal Stephenson. The novel follows the exploits of two groups of people in two different time periods, presented in alternating chapters. The first group is World War II-era Allied codebreakers and tactical-deception operatives affiliated with the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, and disillusioned Axis military and intelligence figures whom they encounter. The second narrative is set in the late 1990s with descendants of the first narrative's characters employing cryptologic, telecom and computer technology to build an underground data haven in the fictional Sultanate of Kinakuta. Their goal is to facilitate anonymous Internet banking using electronic money and (later) digital gold currency, with a longer range objective to distribute Holocaust Education and Avoidance Pod (HEAP) media for instructing genocide-target populations on defensive warfare.

Rick and Shane travel to a municipal building in a town and have a frank discussion about Shane's feelings for Lori and about the circumstances surrounding Otis' death, with Shane questioning his friend's ability to make the hard decisions. They've taken the wounded man from the previous episode 18 miles out from the farm to abandon him. The man begs them to let him stay, inadvertently revealing that he went to school with Maggie and thus knows the location of the farm. Shane wants to kill him, but Rick says he needs to think about it first. Their disagreement leads to a fight, which awakens a group of walkers from inside the building. All three barely make it out alive. Back at the farm, Beth says she's given up on life and is contemplating suicide. Both Lori and Maggie attempt to talk her out of it and want to place her under watch, but Andrea says Beth needs to find her own reasons to keep living. Beth locks herself in the bathroom and uses a piece of broken mirror to slit her wrist, but Lori manages to break open the door before she bleeds out. Maggie and Lori are furious with Andrea for not keeping an eye on Beth; Andrea defends herself by saying Beth no longer wants to commit suicide and Hershel was able to save her. Rick tells Shane that he needs to follow his (Rick's) lead from now on. They then put the injured attacker back in the trunk and drive back to the farm.

Alex releases slogan t-shirts for babies but they become popular with the teenage girl crowd, who make her shop their newest hangout. Meanwhile, Jane searches for the now 11-year-old girl she thinks is the result of the egg she donated.

Tina starts hanging out with bad girl, Tammy, in an effort to get closer to Jimmy Junior.

Having had her van booted by the cops and, fearing the authorities will eventually track them down through the registration, Nancy decides to leave Seattle behind. Andy confronts her about the feelings that exist between the two of them, and she "releases" him from the hope of anything ever happening between them. Silas is devastated about having to leave a normal life behind and Shane manages to bluff his way out of a tough situation with the mommy group. Cesar and Ignacio, with Doug in tow, manage to track the Botwins to their motel and take Shane hostage, while the mommy group calls in child services to take Stevie. Latrice, Nancy's rival at the hotel, and her boyfriend, Quentin, discover her scheme and decide to get even for being left out.

In 1983, in a US Department of Energy laboratory in the town of Hawkins, Indiana, a scientist is attacked by an unseen creature. 12-year-old Will Byers vanishes after encountering the creature while riding his bicycle home from a Dungeons & Dragons session with his friends. The next day, a young girl with a shaved head, wearing a hospital gown, steals food from a local diner. The owner, Benny (Chris Sullivan), takes pity on her and feeds her before calling social services. A woman posing as a social worker arrives and shoots Benny. Armed men search the diner for the girl, but she escapes. Joyce, Will's mother, believes she hears Will's voice on a distorted phone call, but her phone short circuits. Will's friends Lucas, Mike, and Dustin find the girl in the woods as they search for Will.

Leslie has her speech stolen that she was going to give at an event, while Ben starts his new job. Ann continues her quest to find someone to have a baby with.

Kent Brockman realizes he has made a mistake becoming a local news reporter and attempts to become a part of the Fox News cast.
